Spectranet vs Smile MiFi Data Plans: Comparison & Prices

A portable WiFi device can connect a laptop, tablet and several other devices without relying on a phone’s hotspot. The amount of data included with the package, the price of renewals and the strength of the local network all affect how much you spend and how reliable the connection feels.

Spectranet and Smile Communications both sell 4G LTE internet devices and data packages in Nigeria. Their MiFi prices, monthly data allowances, longer validity bundles and speed conditions are not the same. Some Spectranet plans include night browsing, while Smile has daily, weekly, monthly and annual data packages, along with bundles that include streaming data.

This Spectranet vs Smile comparison covers device prices, current data plans, network coverage and speed conditions.
Prices may change as either provider updates its packages. Check the latest listings before subscribing.

Spectranet vs. Smile MiFi Prices

The initial price of a MiFi can include a starter data bundle, so the cost is not always for the device alone. Check the package details before paying to confirm the included data and any renewal conditions.

Spectranet MiFi Prices

Spectranet sells two portable WiFi devices: the Freedom MiFi and the Titan MiFi.

DeviceIncluded dataListed price
Freedom MiFi100GB₦15,000
Titan MiFi100GB₦25,000

The Freedom MiFi supports 4G LTE connectivity in a pocket sized design. The Titan MiFi also supports 4G LTE, with WiFi 6 for wireless connections between the device and compatible phones, laptops and tablets. The prices include the device and its advertised data bundle. Confirm the amount of starter data included with your chosen Freedom MiFi package before paying.

Spectranet vs Smile MiFi Data Plans

Smile MiFi Prices

Smile sells SMiFi devices with bundled data or monthly service plans.

The Maxi packages combine the SMiFi device with a service plan, so their price should not be compared with a device and a small starter data bundle as if both packages include the same service. Smile also has router packages, including a router with 130GB of data for ₦30,000 and a “250GB Unlimited Data” bundle with a router for ₦50,000. Both packages are separate from the portable SMiFi bundles.

Spectranet vs. Smile: Network Coverage and Speed

Both providers use 4G LTE for their mobile broadband services, but their coverage is not uniform at every address. Spectranet covers Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and Port Harcourt, along with more than 120 other towns and cities. Smile also has coverage in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, Benin City, Kaduna, Onitsha, Asaba and Kano. A city being listed as covered does not guarantee that every street, building or indoor location receives a good signal. Walls, local network congestion, device placement and distance from the serving site can all affect connection quality.

Actual speeds depend on signal strength and network conditions. Smile’s Maxi Home plan advertises speeds of up to 5Mbps, while Maxi Office goes up to 8Mbps. Spectranet’s long validity plans have their own speed limits, so check the details for the specific package. Both providers have online coverage tools. Their coverage pages can help check service availability for a particular area, although indoor signal quality still depends on the location and equipment.

Spectranet Night Browsing vs. Smile Streaming Bonuses

Spectranet’s doMORE packages include night browsing on selected plans. Some have a fixed night allowance, while others advertise unlimited night browsing under the package terms. Smile’s MINI and MIDI plans include extra streaming data on selected packages. This bonus is meant for supported streaming services, not unrestricted use across all websites and apps.

The two benefits are calculated in different ways. Spectranet’s night allowance is tied to the time of use, while Smile’s streaming bonus is tied to supported services and the terms of the selected bundle. The main data allowance and bonus data should be considered separately when comparing the packages.

Spectranet WiTel vs. Smile Voice Services

Spectranet’s WiTel combo plans pair data with call minutes. You can get 7GB and 100 minutes for ₦3,500, 10GB and 200 minutes for ₦5,500, or 20GB and 300 minutes for ₦9,500. Each package lasts one month.

Smile also has separate SmileVoice services. The exact voice options depend on the service, SIM and device being used. A MiFi is mainly intended to share an internet connection over WiFi, so do not assume that a standard MiFi can make ordinary cellular calls just because a provider has voice plans. Check the voice and data allowances before purchasing a plan. Data only plans do not automatically include voice minutes.

What Affects the Total Cost of Spectranet vs. Smile?

The initial device price is only one part of the cost. The included starter data, renewal price, allowance, validity and any speed reduction after the main allowance can change the amount you spend over time. For example, a 30 day data plan may need to be renewed every month, while a 90 day or annual bundle spreads its validity over a longer period. The cost per gigabyte also depends on the amount included in the plan and any bonus restrictions.

A large data bundle is less useful when the connection keeps dropping. Weak signals and network interruptions can disrupt video calls, downloads and streaming, even when plenty of data is available. Coverage maps and advertised speeds also cannot guarantee the same connection quality at every address.

Spectranet has doMORE plans with night browsing, larger data bundles and packages with longer validity. Smile has daily, weekly and monthly plans, as well as Jumbo and annual bundles. Selected packages also include extra streaming data. Each provider has its own prices, data allowances and speed limits. Local signal strength also affects connection reliability.
