Everyone in Nigeria knows the struggle of running out of data right when you need it most. You could be watching a football highlight, joining an online class, or catching up on your favorite show and suddenly that dreaded notification pops up telling you your data is finished. With how much of our lives now depend on being online, the question almost every MTN user has asked at some point is simple but important. Does MTN actually have unlimited data plans or are we still limited to different bundle sizes?
Data has become like fuel for our phones, powering work, play, and connection. But is there really an MTN bundle that never runs dry?

What is an Unlimited Data Plan?
An unlimited data plan sounds like the dream for anyone who spends hours online. It is supposed to mean you can browse, stream, download, and scroll all day without ever worrying about your data finishing. On paper, the word unlimited suggests there are no boundaries at all. But in reality, most telecom companies add what is called a Fair Usage Policy, or FUP for short.
Here’s what that really means: instead of truly giving you endless high-speed internet, the provider sets a hidden threshold. Once you cross that limit, they will not cut you off completely, but your browsing speed drops. For example, you might be able to stream YouTube videos smoothly at the start of your subscription, but after using a certain amount of data, you notice the videos begin to buffer, downloads take longer, and general browsing slows down. The provider does this to prevent a few heavy users from consuming too much bandwidth at the expense of others on the network.
So, while the term unlimited sounds attractive, the experience is usually “limited unlimited.” You can still stay connected after hitting the cap, but the speed reduction can be frustrating if you rely heavily on fast internet for things like gaming, video calls, or HD streaming. For light users, this might not be a big issue. But for people who work online or consume a lot of content, it is important to know what “unlimited” really means before subscribing.
Does MTN Nigeria Offer Unlimited Data Plans?
Yes. MTN Nigeria now offers unlimited data plans, although they are not available as ordinary smartphone data bundles. The current unlimited options are designed for MTN broadband devices, including the newer Outdoor Unit (ODU) plans and 5G Router plans.
For users who need a home or office internet connection without a fixed monthly data cap, the ODU plans are now one of MTN’s available options. MTN currently lists a 50Mbps unlimited ODU plan for ₦30,000 and a 100Mbps unlimited ODU plan for ₦45,000, with both plans valid for 30 days.
MTN Unlimited ODU Plans
MTN’s ODU unlimited plans are built around speed instead of a fixed data allowance. The current options listed by MTN are:
- 50Mbps Unlimited ODU: ₦30,000, valid for 30 days.
- 100Mbps Unlimited ODU: ₦45,000, valid for 30 days.
The ODU setup is intended for broadband use, making it more suitable for a home, office, or other fixed location where several devices may connect to the same internet service.
MTN Unlimited 5G Router Plans
MTN also has speed based unlimited plans for its 5G Routers. The Gold Unlimited plan offers speeds of up to 50Mbps for ₦40,000, while the Diamond Unlimited plan offers speeds of up to 100Mbps for ₦65,000.
These plans come with uncapped data volumes, but MTN applies a Usage Threshold Policy. Gold speeds are reduced to 5Mbps after 400GB of usage during the validity period, while Diamond speeds are reduced to 5Mbps after 800GB.
This means MTN’s unlimited broadband plans do not stop your internet access after you reach a particular data allowance. Instead, the speed can be reduced after the stated usage threshold.
Business Unlimited Data
MTN Nigeria also makes provision for corporate clients with large data needs. Business users can subscribe to data plans with much higher allowances compared to regular personal bundles. These packages are more flexible and can support multiple employees or devices. Just like with broadband, they also have usage policies to balance the network.
For someone looking for unlimited home internet, the ODU plans are now an important part of MTN’s offering. The 50Mbps plan costs ₦30,000 per month, while the 100Mbps option costs ₦45,000. Users considering the 5G Router plans also have the Gold and Diamond options, with the applicable usage thresholds clearly stated by MTN.
MTN Nigeria Night Plans
MTN Nigeria offers night browsing bundles that allow downloads at cheap prices:
- ₦25 for 250 MB (12 am – 5 am)
- ₦50 for 500 MB (12 am – 5 am)
- ₦200 for 1 GB (11 pm – 6 am)
Although limited to night time, many students and workers use it as an option to download files.
MTN Nigeria Home Broadband Unlimited Plans
For homes and offices, MTN has Unlimited Broadband packages.
- Silver Unlimited (₦30,000/month) – Up to 150 GB at full speed, then 2 GB daily on exhausting main bundle.
- Ruby Unlimited (₦45,000/month) – Up to 260 GB at full speed, then 2 GB daily on exhausting main bundle.
These plans allow continuous internet access but with throttled speeds after reaching the FUP limit.

MTN 5G Unlimited Broadband Plans
MTN 5G routers give customers access to very fast internet for streaming, gaming, remote work, and family use. While some plans are marketed as “unlimited,” they follow a Fair Usage Policy, which means speeds drop after heavy usage. The good part is that these broadband packages come with large data allowances, making them suitable for households and businesses that need stable and reliable internet every day.
You can subscribe to any MTN data plan by simply dialing *312*1# on your phone and following the on screen prompts.

Why MTN Nigeria Doesn’t Offer True Unlimited Data
- Network management – If every subscriber had unlimited access, the network could become congested, slowing down internet speeds for everyone. Limiting usage helps MTN maintain quality service.
- Profitability – Data is a major source of revenue. Offering true unlimited data at cheap rates would not be sustainable for MTN’s business model.
- Fair distribution – By placing limits, MTN ensures that heavy users do not consume all the bandwidth, allowing casual users to still enjoy stable browsing and streaming.
In the long run, MTN Nigeria may not give you true unlimited data, but it still has options that can work for different needs. If you just need data at night for downloads, the night bundles are cheap and handy. If you use the internet all day for work, streaming, or gaming, the 4G and 5G broadband plans might be a better fit. The point is to pick the plan that matches your lifestyle so you do not waste money or run out of data too quickly. Once you understand the limits, you can enjoy stable internet without too many surprises.
